The Nir operon consists of gene nirS, which is the catalytic subunit for the nitrite reductase. Included in the operon are multiple cytochromes and genes involved in heme d1 biosynthesis. These co-factors are required to complete the reduction of nitrite (NO2-) to nitric oxide (NO)[1]. Nir is the second enzyme in the denitrification pathway.
